Hana Shoji

Since 1987 Hana Shoji & Interiors has specialized in custom made shoji screen windows and doors. Along with custom shoji screens, we also do custom fusuma and amado, as well as complete tatami rooms. We serve the San Francisco Bay area, where we install our products and we also take special commissions from around the country.

Most of our work is residential and it is usually done directly with the homeowner. We also do commercial projects, with an architect or contractor specifying the details. From our shop in Oakland, we are centrally located for installations in San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin, Berkeley, Contra Costa and the East Bay.

Japanese Interior Design and Consulting

In addition to manufacturing custom shoji and fusuma, we also offer a separate consulting service for Japanese interiors. Perhaps you need details for a new tatami room or how best to incorporate a closet and tokonoma on the same wall. We work with architects and contractors, as well as directly with the homeowner to create unique design solutions. Of course, this service is included in all our projects where we install our products.

Materials

Hardwoods -- oak, maple, cherry, mahogany -- and soft woods -- redwood, fir, hemlock, and cedar are the most popular woods we use. Insert materials include Japanese shoji paper, fiberglass, laminates, and glass.

Pricing

Shoji and fusuma generally fall in the range of $35 to $45 per square foot, installed. Prices vary by size of job, number of panels, type of wood and finish, and type of insert material. With so many variables, we suggest you call for a quote.

The Hana Shoji Difference

What sets us apart from so many other shoji makers? We offer a complete package, from measurements in your home, to custom manufacture, to installation of our products. We have always felt it is one thing to make shoji; it is another to make them work and fit properly. For that reason we do our own installations, with skill and confidence honed by 18 years of experience. As a result the bulk of our custom shoji screens, custom fusuma, and amado are done in the San Francisco Bay area.
